The Photo Bin - December 2013

So far away from this Southern boy's place.
Snow. Ice. Big city lights.
Chicago on Christmas.

But intimate indoors, tucked away from the chill.
Grandkids. Family. Big time love.
Chicago on Christmas.

Cold on the outside, warm on the in.
Both the city and I, that night.
Chicago on Christmas.

What is a Photo Bin?

I ran away from winter in that city, hard and fast.

But Christmas at home is still warmer than Christmas alone in TX.

Happy Holidays, Mike.

You were not alone in your escape, Dan. I've never seen the streets so empty. Eerie, really. But as you suggest, it's the company, not the location, that provides the holiday warmth. Thanks for the reminder.

And a happy new year to you as well.

I miss the Illinois snow form my house in California, but I think I miss my family more.

Amen to that, Daniel.

Somewhere around the late 70's, on New Year's Eve, I was alone wandering down a Chicago street much like the one in your last photo. I was walking on snow. I was looking down on the roofs of the cars. The snow was piled to hood level.

Sometimes it's picturesque, sometimes it makes you pause and wonder. Other times, it's just another form of hell.

Happy New Year Mike.

And sometimes, Ken, it seems that it's all three at the same time, often depending on which way the hawk is flying.

And a happy new year to you, too, sir. Next trip up...

I recall having a wonderful time that night, wandering down streets, going from bar to bar, most of them empty. That was before those yellow lights so things looked different some how.

Yes, next trip. Pick one of those months where the average is above freezing.

I, too, quite liked being out snapping these shots. But for the family back indoors, I could have wandered for a while. And it's always interesting how eyes and cameras often catch scenes differently. In this case, however, it's just how I remembered it. Warm and cold at the same time.

And which month would that be? July?
